The prescribing of weight loss injections

You might hear in the news soon that weight loss injections can be prescribed by your GP from June 2025.

We have been advised by Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) who commission local health resources that these medications will not be prescribable by GPs for the management of obesity under any circumstance in South Warwickshire.

The ICB will be commissioning new obesity services soon that will accommodate those patients that are eligible for this treatment under the NHS.

NHS England have recognised the high demand for these medications and have published a 12-year phased implementation period for them. The highest priority cohort in the first year will include patients with a BMI >40 (adjusted for ethnicity) AND 4 or more of the following health conditions:

Patients will be required to engage with the NHS England commissioned structured wraparound care support package, that will focus on psychological support, nutrition and increasing physical activity.

Please DO NOT contact the surgery to arrange appointments to discuss this with a GP.

The ICB will publish further information on their website in due course, and we would strongly advise patients to keep a look out for this: Integrated Care Board – Happy Healthy Lives
